What do I want to say with my art? In short: movement, imperfection, and impression.

Movement and motion can be found in the composition of my work. The magnolia blooms I paint over and over all have a story to tell with their placement and direction. The abstract strokes  I spread across the canvas share the same purpose.

Imperfection is key to my artwork. I have never found happiness or satisfaction in forcing myself to paint a thing exactly as it appears. In fact, it feels dishonest. I prefer to let the paint strokes and pencil marks come forward. I wouldn’t dare to cover up obvious brush marks or crooked lines. I try to let the painting be a painting.

Impression refers to both my artistic style and also my desire to convey an emotion. I spent a year creating a series based upon the hope and relief I felt after coming across a blooming magnolia tree after the longest winter of my life. To do this, I took a number four filbert brush and dragged it across the canvas to leave the impression of a blossoming flower.

Everything we do in life leaves an impression, and this is mine. Thank you for celebrating imperfection with me.
